Teso are found mainly in the Teso sub-region (and parts of Pallisa District (Uganda), and Busia County (Kenya).
Iteso population densities range from about 32 per square kilometer in the more arid portions of northern Uganda to over 500 in the densely populated areas of Kenya. In Kenya, where the population has increased dramatically in the late twentieth century, the majority of Iteso are now under 15 years of age.1
The Kenyan Iteso community settled in Busia and around Mt. Elgon. Numbering about 578,000, they live mainly in Busia County, in the two sub-counties, Teso North and Teso South. Teso also can be found in Bugoma and Trans Nzoia County. In Uganda, they are the second largest ethnic group, numbering more than 1.7 million2
